Once Upon a Time is Fairytale Fanfiction!

A few months ago I wrote a journal entry about an upcoming show on ABC called Once Upon a Time.  Well I'm happy to say that I just watched the pilot on imdb.com (click on the link to watch it!)  and I have decided that I am very much looking forward to more episodes of this show.

Being a fan of fanfiction, this type of show is something I can definitely sit, with a bowl of popcorn, and get comfortable with.  It takes the characters we all know from the Disney and other fairytale worlds (for example: Snow White, Prince Charming, Jimmy Cricket and Rumpelstiltskin) and breathes new life.  What is it the line that fanfic authors place before they publish a story chapter:

A/N: I do not own these characters. All characters belong to <insert author>. I'm just playing in their universe.

Well, you can say that the show's creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (producers of Lost) did just this.  In fanfiction terms, this is an alternate universe (AU), where I suspect that some characters will maintain their canon abilities and original characters (OC) thrown into the mix.

Show Summary from IMDB.com: Once Upon a Time centers on a woman with a troubled past who is drawn into a small town in Maine where the magic and mystery of Fairy Tales just may be real.

The woman mentioned in the story is one of the OCs and this alternate universe takes place in the future of the fairytale character's time but during our present.  And the show is located (mainly) in our world. Whew! Sounds confusing while writing, but makes perfect sense when watching.

I wish we could all see our favorite fanfiction stories on screen with some actors such as Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas, Lee Arenberg, and Giancarlo Esposito.  Check out the pilot on imdb.com or if you prefer to wait for the airing date, the show will premiere on ABC this Sunday (10/23) at 8:00 PM in most locations.  Check tvguide.com for your local listing and time.

Have you watched the pilot yet? Let me know what you think.

New TV Show: Once Upon a TIme

Out of all the new shows that ABC announced today (still kind of sad to see No Ordinary Family go), the one that stood out to me was Once Upon A Time.  It's a story that takes the fairy tale world and places it in modern times.  Umm ... how can fans of paranormal books and such not want to peek at something like this.

Now, I know the "fairytale characters in the real world" has been done before (think Enchanted with Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams), but it just happens to be a theme that can be done so many ways that it will always have potential to be good depending on the approach.
Once Upon a Time

One key part of the approach that caught my eye is the casting.  The cast includes Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love), Josh Dallas (Thor), and Lee Arenburg (POTC) as Grumpy! You will recognize Lee from Pirates of the Caribbean series as Pintel ... I'm thinking he's going to fit Grumpy to a "tee".  Josh Dallas is a little new to the movie/tv scene for most of us.  But if you saw the new Thor movie -- he wasn't hard to miss -- you may note that he could fit the Prince Charming bill nicely.  And then there's Ginnifer ... her recent roles as young and underestimated sister wife Margene from Big Love and in Something Borrowed  (not to mention He's Not That Into You ) makes me think that she will play a lovable Snow White.  And those three are just a taste of the casting magic that I'm hoping will work on this show.

This show is from the producers of Lost, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.  A series that was full of nothing but creativity and kept the watchers wondering what will happen next. Oh and did I mention that this is a drama? And from the looks of the trailer on abc.com, there's some action and mystery too.  Sounds like another good approach to me.

It looks like they are going to run the show during the 8pm slot on a Sunday.  I'm kind of glad that they chose this slot because last year ABC decided to pit their another try at the paranormal (The Gates) against True Blood.  A bad idea since the story was kind of good.

Ok that's all the info I found out about the show so far.  I would love to hear what you guys think.  Here's the full synopsis of Once Upon a Time from ABC.com:

Writer's Block: Merlin revisited

If you were granted unlimited magic powers for just five minutes, what would you do?

World peace and then quickly solve the biggest problems of the world like poverty and disease
As I mentioned in my very first LJ post, I'm still trying to figure out the lay of the land.  And quite frankly, I haven't devoted much time to it since I sent out that post.  Well, I've been logging on and poking around almost daily but not to do significant damage.

BUT .. with that said, I've been trying to figure out what I would do with this area.  See I have a place to post my fanfiction stories and others to back it up (fanfiction.net, fandomfiction.com, and Archive of Our Own),  All sites that are great sites that have been created for that short of thing.

I also have a blog (or two or three ... ssh, I know that's a lot but some are RL stuff) ... the one I'd mention here is the one I have for the SVM Fandom (which the name Sapfirerose is throughly attached to) .... My SVM Addiction.  I'm kind of loving that thing, in any case check it out. It's a blog about promoting great SVM fanfiction stories and it's written by a reader for other readers.  That means that I actually read more stories and I rarely write them.  I am a fan.

So .... that said what I was thinking about for LJ was to treat it as a conduit it was created for. Live journaling.  Now the rub is ... what the heck am I journaling. Haha!  I can assure you that it won't be my deepest, darkest secrets etc. That's stuff is a snooze fest any how.  I can also say that it will involve the things folks who know me as Sapfirerose are interested in like True Blood, Southern Vampire Mysteries, etc.

There .. I think it's settle.  Now ... back to figuring out what I'm going to do about this LJ design!!

If your reading this .. thanks for checking out yet another ramble!
*hugs*

Never Posted On LJ Before

*looking around and trying to figure this thing out*

While sitting here at work, and on my bloggy vacation, I'm playing on Live Journal. I tend to only go on here to check out posts from certain SVM writers like my girl janofarc  because I know she solely posts on a few sites.  Then I poke around for a bit and leave. But today ... or at least over the next week or two. I'm determined to figure out LJ.  Here's the stuff I need to figure out:

  1. Design:  I like the design I have now .. it sort of matches the colors of my blog, My SVM Addiction. I LOVE all shades of blue but I'm a big fan of this shade of blue.  Anywho, all I want to do is change the header thing for now.  If I can do that then I'm good to go.

  3. Messages:  What the heck does messages mean on this site.  Right now, it says I have 74. But if I click on the link, I have no idea who some of those messages are from. Not only that, do I really have to know every time someone uploads a userpic. Can I turn this feature off? It goes to my inbox as well.
  4. -

  5. Communities and Friends:  Where can I find the ones I've joined or friended AND what does that mean? I guess for some if they have exclusive setting where only friends or members can see their page or community blah blah blah, but I can't seem to find it on here if I don't do a google search for the page. Haha!
  6. -

  7. What Else and What Will I Do With It: I'm sure that is just the tip of the iceberg. So Looking forward to finding out what else is here and not only that. I am an online user with purpose -- meaning that I tend to join sites and figure out what I'm going to do with it before I get really involved with it. If I don't do this, it will just become another time-suck activity. And I already have a lot of those. Haha!

So, I'm sure a lot of this is elementary knowledge to most and it will soon become intuitive to me as I began to use this more. But for now .. I feel like a fish in new water. And that's coming from someone who has been in the online biz for yeeeeeears and have used just about all types of content management type systems. Haha!

At any rate, happy to be here and thankful for a place to add this journal entry that's more of a ramble then anything.

Cheers.
